‘‘கல்கியோட அலையோசை கிடைச்சா வாங்கிட்டு வாங்க சார்…’’

ரெங்கா வந்து நூறு ரூபாய்த்தாளை கொடுத்தான். கிளம்பும் அவசரத்திலிருந்த சிவராமன் அதை வாங்கி வைத்துகொண்டு தலையாட்ட,

‘‘கல்கியோட எல்லா நூல்களையும் படிச்சிட்டேன், இந்த அலையோசையை தவிர. அலையோசை அருமையான நாவல்னு கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கேன். படிக்க ணும்னு ரொம்ப நாளா ஆசை’’ என்ற ரெங்கா,

‘‘இருவத்தஞ்சு கடைக்குமேல போட்டி ருக்கானாம். ஏதாவது ஒரு கடையில புத்தகம் நிச்சயம் கிடைக்கும்’’ என்று கூறிவிட்டு கட்டைகள் ஊன்றி நகர்ந்து போனான்.

சிறுவயதில் போலியோ வந்து இரண்டு கால்களும் பாதிக்கப்பட்டபிறகு கட்டைகளையே கால்களாக பாவித்து நடந்துவரும் ரெங்கா சரியான புத்தகப்புழு.

பிரதாப முதலியார் சரித்திரத்திலிருந்து ஒரு கேள்வி கேட்டால் பட்டென்று பதில் சொல்லுவான். அவனுக்கு அசோக மித்திரனும், கி. ராஜநாராயணனும் அத்துப்படி.

ஏற்கனவே படித்த புத்தகங்கள்தாம். இருந்தாலும் பக்கங்களை புரட்டும்போது மனத்தில் பழைய நினைவுகள் ஞாபக அலைகளாக புரளும். சிவராமனிடம் ஒரு பழக்கமுண்டு. புத்தகங்களை இரவல் தரவே மாட்டான்.

‘‘நீ ங் க தா ன் இ தை யெ ல் லா ம் படிக்கறதே யில்லையே. பேசாம எல்லாத்தையும் பழைய பேப்பர்காரன்கிட்ட போட்டுடவா…?’’

புத்தகங்கள் வெறும் காகிதங்களின் கோர்வையே என்ற எண்ணம் கொண்ட மாலா கேட்டபோது சிவராமன் பற்களை கடித்தான்.

‘‘லைப்ரரியில மு.வவோட கரித் துண்டு இல்லையாம். அது தெரியாம தேடித்தேடி அலுத்துட்டேன்’’என்று ரெங்கா ஒருநாள் சொன்னபோது சிவராமன் வாயை திறக்கவில்லை.

‘‘கரித்துண்டு எங்கிட்ட இருக்கு. எடுத்துட்டு போய் படிச்சிட்டு தாயேன்’’ என்று சொல்ல அவனுக்கு மனம் வரவில்லை. புத்தகத்தை வீணாக்கிவிடுவானோ என்ற பயம்.

டிக்கெட் விலையை கேட்டபோது மயக்கம் வந்தது. அதற்காக வாங்காமல் வந்தால் மகன் விடுவானா… அவனை சமாளித்தாலும் மாலாவை சமாளிக்க முடியாதே. சிவராமன் அரை மனதோடு டிக்கெட் வாங்கி கொண்டு வந்தான்.

‘‘ஒரு டிக்கெட் நூறு ரூபாயாம் மாலா…’’

பஞ்சுமிட்டாயோடு வந்துவிடலாம் என்று எண்ணி வந்தவன் மலைத்து போனான். அடுத்தது மாலாவின் முறை. மாலா எவர்சில்வர் பாத்திரக்கடையை முற்றுகையிட்டாள். எது வும் திருப்தியாக இல்லையோ என்னவோ, உதட்டை பிதுக்கியபடி வெளியே வந்த வள் புடவைக்கடையை பார்த்ததும் பிரகாச மானாள்.

‘‘ஐந்நூறு ரூபா புடவை எரநூத்து அம்பதுதான். அருமையான புடவைங்க. பாதிக்கு பாதி விலைதான். வாங்க, வந்து புடிச்சதை எடுத்துகிட்டு போங்க…’’

கடைவாசலில் நின்றிருந்தவன் இவளைப் பார்த்ததும் சற்று சத்தமாகவே குரல் கொடுத்தான்.

‘‘என்னங்க, அந்தப்புடவை நல்லா யிருக்குல்ல…’’

வாசலில் வரிசையாக தொங்கிக் கொண்டி ருந்த புடவையில் ஒன்றை காட்டினாள். சிவராமன் அவளை முறைத்தான்.

‘‘கையில நூத்தம்பதுக்குமேல ஒத்த பைசா இல்ல, தெரிஞ்சிக்க…’’

‘‘ஆமா. எப்பப்பார்த்தாலும் பஞ்சப் பாட்டு தான். நான் கேட்டு ஒரு ஹேர்பின்கூட நீங்க வாங்கி கொடுத்ததில்ல.’’

‘‘நான் வாங்கித்தராம பக்கத்து வீட்டுக்காரனா வாங்கித் தர்றான்.’’

சிவராமன் கோபத்தில் பற்களை கடித்தான். கிட்டதட்ட ஐந்து நிமிட விவாதத்துக்கு பிறகு மாலா ஜெயித்தாள்.

ரெங்கா கொடுத்த நூறு ரூபாயும் புடவைக்கடைக்காரன் கைக்கு போனது. ரெங்கா வந்து புத்தகத்தை கேட்டால் என்ன செய்வது என்று சிவராமனுக்கு யோசனையாக இருந்தது.

‘புத்தகம் கிடைக்கவில்லை என்று சொல்லிவிடலாம். ஆனால் அவன் கொடுத்த பணத்தை திருப்பி தந்தாக வேண்டுமே. பணத்திற்கு எங்கே போவது. ஒன்றாம் தேதி வர இன்னும் சில நாட்கள் உள்ளதே..’.

தவித்த சிவராமனுக்கு சட்டென்று அந்த ஐடியா வந்தது. அவசரமாய் போய் அலமாரியைத் திறந்தான். வரிசையாக அடுக்கி வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த புத்தகங்களில் நான்காவது வரிசையில் அலையோசை தென்பட்டது.

கடைசியாக சிவராமன் வாங்கிய புத்தகம் அது. சிவராமன் அதை மெல்ல எடுத்தான். வாங்கி சில வருடங்கள் ஆகியிருந்தபோதும் புத்தகம் புதுசு போல் பளிச்சென்றிருந்தது.

மறுநாள் அலுவலகம் முடிந்து வந்த வனை ரெங்கா வழிமறித்தான்.

‘‘என்ன ரெங்கா…?’’ என்ற சிவராமனுக்கு உள்ளூர பதைபதைப்பு. ரெங்கா அந்த பத்து ரூபாய்த்தாளை அவனிடம் நீட்டினான்.

‘‘புத்தகத்துல இந்த பத்து ரூபா இருந்துச்சு. நேத்து தவறுதலா வச்சிட்டீங்க போல.’’

‘‘பத்து ரூபாய்தானே. அதுக்காக கடை யை விட்டுட்டு வந்தியா….?’’ சிவராமன் சிரித்தபடி கேட்டான்.

‘‘பத்து ரூபாதானேன்னு ஈஸியா சொல்லாதீங்க சார். அஞ்சு பைசா காணாபோனாக்கூட என்னால தாங்கிக்க முடியாது. அதேமாதிரி அடுத்த வங்களோட பணம் ஒத்த பைசாவா இருந்தாலும் எங்கிட்ட இருந்தா எனக்கு தூக்கமே வராது’’என்றவன்,

‘‘அருமையான நாவல் சார். கீழே வைக்க மனசே வரலை. ஒரேநாள்ல முடிச்சிட்டேன். நூறு ரூபா கொடுத்தாலும் நல்ல மதிப்பு சார்…’’என்று கூறிவிட்டு கட்டையூன்றி நடந்து போனான்.

சிவராமன் கையிலிருந்த ரூபாயை வெறித்து பார்த்தான். மனம் ஊனப்பட்டு போயிருந்தது.
